Movin’ On Up! - Sowmya Venugopal

Hailing from Bengaluru, Sowmya Venugopal is an upcoming actress who’s appeared in three films so far. She’s currently shooting for her fourth, a horror film opposite Sundeep Kishan. She moved to Hyderabad in pursuit of making it big in the film business, and in our opinion, she’s on the right path!

Although Sowmya had dreams of being a ramp model when she was younger, destiny had other plans. From posing for a still camera for print advertisements, to acting in feature-length films, she’s already come a long way, but there’s no stopping this vivacious lady. Read on to get a sneak-peek into her life…

How did acting come about for you? Was it always on the cards?
Ever since I was a kid I wanted to be a ramp model, but unfortunately because of my height I couldn’t pursue it. So I went on to modelling for advertisements, mostly print ones in Tamil. And that led to acting.

How has the experience been so far?
I have appeared in three films so far. But my last one – Inthalo Ennenni Vinthalo – was my first lead role, and it was absolutely great working in it. My journey has been exciting, I’ve made lots of friends along the way and each day is a new learning experience.

Can you share any details of your current projects?
I recently completed the first schedule of a Telugu and Tamil bilingual horror film that I’m doing with Sundeep Kishan. I can’t wait for the release of this one; it’s super exciting to work in this genre.

If not acting, what other career would you have chosen?
I would have definitely chosen a creative field, perhaps something like fashion or interior design.

When you’re not working you are…?
Hanging out with my friends like any normal girl, watching films or, sometimes, just watching something on Netflix or Amazon Prime at home.

Are there any recent film characters that you wish you had portrayed?
Nayanthara's role in Karthavyam

Tell us about your experience while working in Katamarayudu.
I was absolutely honoured to work in a film with Pawan Kalyan, Shruti Haasan, and other stalwarts. Although I didn’t play a lead role, it was equally important. I played Shiv Balaji’s girlfriend in the film, and just being part of such a big, multi-starrer film was great!

What are your other hobbies?
I enjoy travelling, shopping, and cooking. In fact, I cook my own food everyday as I’m not a big fan of eating out. So a lot of my time goes in that!

You’re happiest when you’re...
Travelling!

What have you always wanted to do but never done?
Ride a motor bike

If you were stranded on an island with someone, who would you want that to be?
I never thought of it, but maybe a phone with unlimited internet (laughs).

What significance does Independence Day have in your life?
I am proud to be an Indian! Every year on August 15th I wake up in the morning to watch the Independence Day parade on television. I feel a sense of patriotism when I watch it. I get to see the efforts and talents of so many people which otherwise go unnoticed.     --- as told to Niharika
