Dying to go skiing atop snow-clad mountains, but don’t have the cash for Europe or North America? Fret not, as Auli in Uttarakhand can really be just as good. It is also far easier to get here than most other snowy peaks, especially if you’re going with young kids. A picturesque destination featuring pristine natural beauty, soaring pine trees, and frosty weather, it’s the perfect escapade for adventure junkies and nature buffs. Located at an altitude of 2,500 metres above sea level, Auli attracts a large number of tourists year-round. In winter, however, Auli is as exhilarating as it gets! The extreme cold and numerous adrenaline-exciting activities like skiing, trekking, hiking, and more make for an unforgettable experience. The temperature ranges between 5°C and -5°C here, so bundling up is a must.
Apart from the outdoor activities, you can visit various tourist destinations like Gurson Bugyal, Trishul Peak, Chenab Lake, Joshimath, and Rudraprayag during these months.
Best time to visit: January to early March
How to get there: Reaching Auli is an adventure in itself. The area does not have proper roads owing to the snow along the mountains. The nearest airport is the one at Dehradun, while the train stations are Haridwar and Dehradun. Haridwar to Joshimath (the base for reaching Auli) is 275 kilometres away.
